Courtney Orr's journey from California to Kansas — shaped by resilience, love, lifelong curiosity, and the people who made it all meaningful.
My name is Courtney Orr, and I now call Kansas home. In 1997, my world changed dramatically. I moved from Hayward, California to Linwood, Kansas — a transition that felt like stepping into an entirely different universe. The diversity, pace, and culture of the Bay Area were suddenly replaced with wide open spaces and small-town rhythms. It was a true culture shock. But in hindsight, it was also the beginning of resilience — the start of learning how to adapt, observe, and grow through change.
As a child, my imagination was always active. I directed neighborhood skits, naturally stepping into leadership roles even before I understood what leadership was. I was curious about everything — how things worked, why systems functioned the way they did, and what made the world move.
My grandmother played a pivotal role in shaping that curiosity. She created opportunities that many children only dream of — visits to the University of California, Berkeley, and to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Those experiences weren't just fun outings; they were formative. Walking through exhibits, observing marine life, and exploring science-focused spaces sparked something lasting. They gave me an appreciation for discovery and a deep interest in understanding how systems and structures operate. Those early exposures laid the building blocks for what would become one of my greatest strengths: the ability to problem-solve with both logic and creativity.
In eighth grade, I experienced a profound loss — my beloved cat passed away. For a young girl, it was more than losing a pet; it was my first deep encounter with grief. That moment shaped my emotional depth and empathy, strengthening my capacity to love and to value connection.
And love has always been central to my life story.
From the time I was young, I knew I wanted to be a mother. It wasn't just a dream — it was a calling. Today, I am the proud mom of children ranging in age from 19 years old to just 18 months. I have cherished every season of motherhood and feel grateful I was able to continue growing my family into my late 30s.
Being a mom is not just something I do — it is who I am. My children are my greatest joy, and loving them has been the most meaningful role of my life.
In 2021, I met the love of my life — a relationship that brought new depth and partnership into my story. I often say I am a better person because of him. He challenges me intellectually, makes me sharper, and supports me fully.
Together, we've built a life centered on love, growth, and family right here in Kansas. My daughter and I feel incredibly lucky to have him — not just as a partner, but as a steady, grounding presence in our lives.
